The Land Before Time 2: EGGS!

The Land Before Time 2: The Great Valley Adventure

The second Land Before Time movie I felt was rather uneventful but it held some notable moments. I would say the most memorable moments of the film in no particular order are:

  1. The Villain's Egg Song

  2. Chomper

  3. Little Foot asking about Babies

  4. You’re one of Us Now

  5. We hate you so scram

  6. Thanks Chomper You’re great

The main plot of the film is that a duo of egg thief dinosaurs are trying to steal eggs from others in the great valley to eat. The duo is made of brothers, Ozzy and Strut, who make egg based puns and have a whole song dedicated to eggs. They steal an egg from a nest and are seen by our main dinosaur children: Little Foot, Cera, Ducky, Petrie, and Spike, who follow to save the egg. The egg they save eventually hatches, revealing that they saved a Sharp tooth whom they name Chomper.

Chomper is easily a character that could have been annoying. He’s a baby, so they made a good choice in not having him talk. He does make some noise, but he doesn’t make a ton. Instead they use mostly facial expressions for him. He also doesn’t hinder the main cast in a way that pushes one of them to the side to make room for him. He simply is there and he is a cute addition to the cast of characters.

The dino gang basically adopted Chomper in a way to prove to the adults that they can handle themselves, a running theme with the group's antics. Once Chomper hatched, and was revealed to be a Sharptooth, they decided to keep him a secret because sharp teeth are a threat to them. But, because of trouble getting Chomper to eat plants like them, it means Little Foot has an interesting conversation with his grandparents. Little Foot approaches his grandparents asking about babies. I was unsure on how this would play out, were they really going to go far into the topic? But all Little Foot really asks is about how to get a baby to eat if it refuses. Grandma and Grandpa Long Neck just say that if they're really hungry they’ll eat and Little Foot, satisfied with the answer, runs off to find Chomper. The scene was sent where it could have gone further into the topic of babies, that I really found it funny that it just left it at that.

In a fun whirlwind of emotion, points 4 and 5 are showcased. The group sings a full on song about Chomper being one of the group, only for them to then run him off yelling at him because he bit Cera’s tail. This is an interesting spectacle because that really is what happens. One moment, he’s a part of their family and they love him, the next is sending the baby running off crying. It really shows how childlike the group is and how quickly they can change emotions.

So the wonderful egg thieves are hatching a plan throughout to get back at the dino gang about saving the eggs from them and it all turns out poorly for them. There’s not much to say about it overall and really their only shining moment I’d say is how memorable that egg song is.

In the end of the film, Chomper is a shining star. He is able to talk to the Sharp Teeth and is adopted by them. They fight for good and at the end they all leave peacefully. Sharp Teeth are still a main series threat to the other Dinosaurs, but in this film it shows them as helping. They themselves are also just dinosaur parents trying to live their lives also. The end wraps up with Chomper and his family leaving and the Great Valley returning to normal again.

Overall a rather basic feeling children's movie, some good and some bad parts but decent. I would recommend watching it to someone who likes campy children's movies and I feel that parents with children wouldn’t mind it being on also. So if you’re in the mood for dinosaurs, here’s one to try.
