1940s Menus and Nutritional Guidance: The Joy Of Cooking (1943)
My Mom owns a copy of the 1943 edition of “The Joy of Cooking” by Irma S. Rombauer. It is a beautiful book and filled with recipes that are near identical to “modern” recipes but also some interesting finds that I would be hard pressed to try. But being that I love 1940s and 1950s things and love to cook, I wanted to share some of the menu ideas and the nutritional guide from the back of the book. I took the information and made these images so they would be easy to see and share. Taking photos of the book I felt would not be very clear and I’m convinced scanning would damage the spine of our book. The book gives menu ideas for each meal and some potential occasions. I simply picked menus from the more formal options and informal options and made a more full day picture of what each could have looked like. I’m sure it’s inaccurate for a real day of eating, but I just was picking from recommended menus. The nutritional guide I reworded a little for the sake of making it format nicely on this little poster. I hope you enjoy! I’m personally debating doing a fuller series on my channel making recipes or maybe trying a menu or two from this book, so stay tuned!
